Previously, I wrote an article, with drawings, showing how to bend both tight and wide curves using vise mounted bending forks with a narrow gap between them. This allows folks to either bend tight or sweeping bends, contingent upon how much hot length you feed between the forks between bends. Although trained as an industrial smith, I now dabble in demonstrating blacksmithing to the public during weekend demonstrations at victorian museums from time to time. I decided to employ industrial production technique to manufacturing leaf and stem paperweights, and employed vise mounted bending forks to bend the curves into the stems that emanate from the leaf. I used 5 sixteenths mild steel material to forge both leaves and stems. Many thanks to Andy Molinaro, from "artisans of the anvil" in Pennsylvania, for posting a video on how to forge the leaf end and for showing the veining techniques that I employed in forging the leaves on youtube. My departure from his technique is how I use the vise mounted bending forks of mine to bend the curves in the stem. By utilizing production techniques to ornamental "flights of fancy", I was able to smash out and bend 138 of these leaves and stems in an 8 hour day. Although inexperienced in doing ornamental work, the techniques I learned in production tool forging enable me to manufacture a regular, finished, and quickly manufactured ornamental work, ready to sell to spectators at the demonstration I am about to give.
