Now I know it was my fault for pushing the limit, or more likely just not using my head, but that made me feel like using gloves while forging was not a good idea. The folks wearing the gloves all felt safer. The gentleman with the fireplace gloves probably was. He used his hands to push coal into the fire and pick up some pretty hot materials. I would have used a shovel, rake or tongs to do some of the same things. So what is the right way? Should you wear gloves or not? I guess it all comes down to what your comfortable with and paying attention that if you do use gloves your using appropriate ones and that you do not get fooled into thinking that they will keep you from burning yourself.

I wear a pair of work gloves with double layer of leather on the palms, thumb and pointer finger. I can handle hot stuff for short periods of time. Mainly I wear them for the times I have a brain fart and grab the wrong thing keeps me out of the ER.
I don't when forging, I too have burned myself more by overdoing with gloves on.
I do however wear eye protection!
I do however wear eye protection!
i do wear gloves on occasion, but when picking up hot metal i wrap the part im goin to hold onto with a peice of soaked leather as an extra precaution
I wear leather welders gloves on my tong hand when forging larger stuff. For small stuff I work bare-handed. Gloves can be bad, if you let the glove get hot, it is harder to get off.
I wear one glove on the tong hand only. This frees my hammer hand more dexterous to manipulate things. Eye protection is a must. I have gotten kinda attached to my eye sight even though it is getting older. Either way with a glove on or off, we need to learn our limits and those are usually learned by "trial by fire" pun intended because it fits. Have a blessed day. <><
I hate wearing gloves but will if i have to, I'd rather no glove, too hot I'll wear one, still to hot, tongs. I never wear one on my hammer hand
