Hello everyone!
Since all I had as tools were a piece of rail track and some random hammers, I got lazy and haven't done much since finishing my blown propane forge (build pics and description to come). But Saturday, I got a breakthrough!
I went to a farm auction on Saturday morning, and although the two anvils' prices skyrocketed out of my range very quickly, I managed to snag a very nice post vise for $25!
It's got 4in jaws that are in near-perfect alignment, a MINT screw, and absolutely NO identifying marks that I could see.
I've been getting the majority of the rust off using a nylon cup brush and a wirebrush, and it's looking to be in surprisingly nice condition.
I'm not going to have a problem dealing with most of the rust, but there's some scratches and gouges that I won't be able to clean up manually. I intend on either painting or using that wax-turpentine-linseed oil mix on the exposed parts of the vise, and I was hoping someone might be able to give pointers on how to prep a working tool like this for finishing. Would it be crazy to slap on some rustoleum without bothering to get rid of ALL the rust?
Meanwhile, since I don't have a hardy on my "anvil", I've been getting together the stock for vise-held hotcuts, a swage plate, spring fullers and a mandrel/horn substitute. We'll see how those turn out once I've got the vise mounted on some sort of stand (I'm thinking a post, a cement base and some wheels...)
PS: If someone can tell me how to shrink these ginormous pictures, I'd be darn happy!
Cheers,
Toreus
