So tried my hand at making tongs today. I used some of my rebar that I have. I learned a lot from this exercise. The main thing this taught me is hammer control and how to use the edges of my RR track to fuller work to get the shapes I need. With all that said I messed this one up. I didn't draw out enough material to have long enough reigns. I could have continued to draw down but it was getting thin. So next time I will leave plenty of steel to draw when I cut off my blank. All in all I am pleased with what I accomplished even if it didn't come out as planned. :D

Heh, I've got an RR anvil and some rebar I want to make into some tongs too! :P

How much starting material did you have, and how much do you think would be enough, considering you said the reins weren't long enough?
This was off of a 1/2" X 4' piece of re-bar. I made the blank then cut it off with 2" inches of shank. If I had cut it off with 4" I would have been good to go oh well live and learn I guess.
Sorry for the late reply I just saw your comment today.
Those reins aren't too short at all.

My favorite pair of tongs had just under 12" of handle, which were very thin. They were quick and nimble to manipulate, and did fantastic when working on small stuff. Hooks, nails, hangers, rivets, you name it, a lot of the little things are what you learn technique on.

I've never really grasped the concept of having 2' of tong to hold a 3" s-hook!

After hearing from you and showing them to a few others I will draw them out more and put them to work. Thanks
