For the last five or more years I have forged with a variety of simple home built forges and junk blowers, my anvil was a piece of 3" round stock 14" long upended in a hackberry stump!
But this year that changed, early in the year I bought a Royal freestanding hand crank blower; it worked wonders to have a good blower.
Last month I bought an old cast iron Fire pot and table. Replaced the bolts holding it all together and set it up with my blower.. I can now reach welding (and melting) heats.
This month I bought a Hay Budden anvil 114# (enough to use, and light enough to move), for less than $2.00 a pound!
Now I am trying my best to practice all the traditional ways of forging, punching, drifting, hot cutting.. I have made a hot cut hardy, a hammer, lots of punches, drifts, chisels, and slitters.
In short, I am pleased!
