Carving Block

Here is what I know as a blacksmith's carving bock
or angle block to use in the vise. The idea came from Bill Epps.

 

 

 

 

This one is made from 2" square heavy wall tubing and a strip of 1/2" thick x 1-1/4" wide flat bar.

 

 

Just cut the angle of the tube to match the side and top of the vise. This will allow the tube to have full support against the vise while in use.

 

 

 

The critter is held firmly in the vise; positioned at a comfortable working height / angle; and has the carving block as a back up for the forging blows.
